The Effect of Human Population (7 billion!) on the Environment

It may be a "small world after all," but the Earth contains about 7 billion people, with half of them packed densely together in urban areas. China and India alone have 36% of the world's population, and the world's population is still growing at a rate of 1.22% per year. As top predators, humans consume lots or resources, many of them nonrenewable, which puts considerable strain on the environment.

The Debate Around Young Trustee's

The debate around young Trustee's has really gained some momentum and heat in recent years. This is partly due to government encouraging initiatives that promote participation from an apathetic and disengaged generation, but also, partly down to charities wanting to improve their internal governance. But the question I have is whether charities should include young people on their Boards if the only justification is that some of their work is youth orientated/inspired. Is that the only valid reason?

Your Vote, Your Voice!

rock_the_vote
Living in the United States of America makes us partakers in its government, policy-making systems, and society. By "us" I mean the young adult age group, a demographic that is constantly disregarded, by both its members and politicians, as constituents that could not truly have an impact on politics.

Real-Life Issues Jump into Comic Book Pages

marvel_character_group-crop
Most of the popular comics that fill up your local newsstands revolve around a superhero kicking some kind of major butt, or zombies eating the last of the humans living on Earth. Writers of your favorite graphic adventures don’t usually delve deep into emotional plots in realistic scenarios. When they incorporate reality into fiction, though, the enhanced material tugs at the heartstrings of certain readers and the superhuman characters become a little bit more relatable.

Girls Should Not Be Wives

Think back to when you were younger and in elementary school. Don’t you remember how carefree life was? Your best days were spent in the classrooms, learning the ABCs and dreading tackling long division. Your mom or dad packed brown bag lunches that you considered gourmet and the only commitments you had revolved around planning play dates with the girl or boy next door. The only type of marriage you were even thinking about either involved marrying off your Barbie doll to G.I. Joe, dressing up in your mom’s wedding dress or dad’s tux, or getting eloped in the school yard. Sadly, many girls around the world can’t look back fondly on their childhoods.

As Gay Bullying Thrives, What Are School Districts Doing to Stop It?

While media coverage has slowly been dying down regarding gay bullying, shocking incidents continue to occur. In the Anoka-Hennepin school district in Minnesota (coincidentally also the district that Tea Partier Michelle Bachmann represents), nine students have committed suicide in the past two years. Out of those nine, four were openly gay and the rest were constantly bullied. Other teens that have been targeted by bullies are refusing to stand up to it, though. In late July, five students sued the district for allowing schools to be hostile environments for the young LGBT community.

There are lots of myths floating around these days that people have to work hard to dispel. The one that bugs me the most? The one claiming that young people are apathetic.
